It’s a little village in the Swiss mountains. Almost hidden. To go up there you need to leave your car in the valley. No cars allowed – just the ones from the few local people. Instead, you take the cable car in order to arrive in Mürren at an altidude of 1600 m.a.s.l.
How to get to Mürren
Mürren is located at the very end of the Lauterbrunnen valley. Either way, you have to pass Interlaken Ost and later Lauterbrunnen in order to get to the little town up the hills. Once in Lauterbrunnen, there are two ways to get to Mürren. Either you take the cable car from Lauterbrunnen and catch the train (10 min) along the mountain side (better option by public transport). Or you pass Lauterbrunnen and go until Stechelberg (better option by car). From there you take another cable car that brings you Mürren. If you arrive after 9pm (no later than 12pm possible) you need to go to Stechelberg anyway.
Mürren is very small. Depending on which option you choose to get there you will arrive at either end of the village. However, it will only take you about 20 minutes to walk through town.
Meeting James Bond
The little mountain village – and especially the Schilthorn – became world famous in the late 60s when the James Bond movie „On her majesty’s secret service“ was recorded up there. From the James Bond sound when entering the cable way to an interactive museum up on the Schilthorn – 007 is still present.
Apart from James Bond Mürren – Schilthorn has more to offer.
There is a sky walk and a thrill walk in Birg (the middle station when going to Schilthorn). One is a platform with a floor made of glass. The other is a path built along the mountain. Due to its floor you can see the ground 200 meters below. It’s pretty exciting.
The best part however is the restaurant on top of Schilthorn. Thanks to its rotating floor you can enjoy a 360° panoramic view – just sitting there and eating at the table. It’s amazing. The unique mountain range of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau invite you to take some great pictures.
Obviously, in winter (from November through march – depending on the snow) you have the chance to go skiing or sledging. Furthermore, it is a paradise for hiking, paragliding, or base-jumping.
Located in the middle of the mountains, there is a very relaxing and energetic atmosphere about this place. However, experiencing the view and the atmosphere of Mürren or Schilthorn is not quite cheap – but definitely worth it.
